CSA: Week 9

July 28, 2011 by Sara Kreidler

Summer in a box; this is why I love my CSA.

It’s going to be a fun week.

This week’s box includes:

  • 2 yellow squash
  • 1 zucchini
  • 1 cabbage
  • 1 green bell pepper
  • 1 small yellow pepper
  • Beets
  • 2 heads of romaine lettuce
  • 1 white onion
  • 6 tomatoes
  • 2 cucumbers
  • Thai basil
  • Dill
  • Scallions
  • Apples
And now for some close ups of the goods:
Squash and peppers.  I can’t remember what kind of pepper the small yellow one is; we had them last year too and they’re not hot but still very flavorful.
Tuh-mey-tohs!  So excited about these guys.  I’m eagerly awaiting the italian golds, arkansas travelers, and green zebras we enjoyed last summer, but I am happy to have these ‘maters in the meantime.
I’m especially excited about this one!  I am pretty sure this is called a german red strawberry tomato, and I am certain we had these last year and I remember loving them.  They are really meaty and mellow tasting.
Look at how big (and pretty) this sucker is!  Ok, enough with the tomato porn.  Moving on…
More beets!  I have three weeks’ worth in the veggie bin in the fridge now, so that’s enough to do at least 1 (maybe 2) jars of pickled beets.  Which is good news since we’re down to only 2 pints from last year’s beet can-a-thon.  Also seen in this shot is a nice white onion which I used tonight to make dinner.
A pointy headed cabbage.  Toby said we had this last year too but I honestly don’t remember it.  Uncle Google provided inconclusive results regarding the name of this cabbage (possibly bejo).
Romaine, up close.
Cucumbers, dill, and thai basil.
And last, but not least, some really nice looking yellow apples.
And in case you’re thinking “Wow Sara, your pictures are noticeably better this week, what gives?”
This.  This is what gives.  Oh, I am so in love with my new light!  This is my early birthday gift from Toby and the kids and I am super geeked out over it.  This kids call it my umbrella light.  I haven’t read the manual yet so there’s still lots of room for learning and improvement, but I’m already very pleased with the difference in my photos (as Owen put it, “like, WHOA, the difference is AMAZING”).  So yeah, I have the best fiance in the world, and a fun new light to make better pictures with.  Winning!
