CSA: Week 11

August 10, 2011 by Sara Kreidler

At first glance, this might look like a smaller haul than the last few weeks.  The difference is that there isn’t any lettuce and only one bunch of kale this week.  But I am swimming in tomatoes!

I’m putting most of this up for winter (except for the carrots and scallions), and you’ll see several posts today and tomorrow detailing how to freeze and can these items.

This week’s box includes:

  • Scallions
  • Carrots
  • 4 ears of corn
  • 1 large bunch of basil
  • 1 large zucchini
  • 1 head of broccoli
  • 2 yellow horn feher ozon paprika peppers
  • 1 green bell pepper
  • 1 head of garlic
  • 1 german red strawberry tomato
  • 1 bunch of kale
  • Approximately 30 tomatoes

And now for some close ups of the goods:

Scallions, corn, basil and carrots.

Basil.  So pretty!

Carrots.  I love how bright and not uniform these are.

I call these yellow horn peppers.  That is definitely not their real name.  If anyone knows what these are really called, please educate me.  Thanks to commenter Nicci, I’ve learned that these are feher ozon paprika peppers.

Green bell pepper and garlic.

Broccoli, up close.

And more tomatoes!

After unpacking the box and taking the photos above, I spent about 90 minutes tonight freezing the kale, peppers, corn, broccoli, and zucchini for later use.  Tomorrow I’m going to can the tomatoes.  I’ll be posting instructions on how to freeze and can these items today and tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Your unnamed peppers look like these: which are also growing in my garden. I know the photo at Seed Savers looks more orange and long, but ours are the yellow color and exact shape of the peppers in your photo.

Thanks Nicci! I think you’re right, those are my unidentified peppers. I’m updating the post to reflect the new information. Thanks again!
