CSA: Week 14

2

August 31, 2011 by Sara Kreidler

Tomorrow the kids go back to school.  Summer is officially over.  On the upside, we are knee deep in tomatoes and other late summer goodies.

This week’s box includes:

  • Approximately 20 red tomatoes
  • 4 peaches
  • 1 bunch of kale
  • 1 green bell pepper
  • 1 red horn shaped pepper
  • 3 green zebra tomatoes
  • 1 bag of baby tomatoes
  • Thai basil
  • Cilantro
  • Cabbage
  • Romaine lettuce
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 bunch of carrots
And now for some close ups of the goods:

Tomatoes (of course).

Peaches.

Kale.  My friend Nikki, who also belongs to the Kretschmann CSA, told me that kale is one of her favorite discoveries from this summer.  It was one of mine too our first year, and now I crave it.

Peppers and more tomatoes.

Green zebra tomatoes.  These have a great flavor, and they’re so pretty in caprese salads.

Baby tomatoes.  Owen already put a dent in these tonight.

Thai basil, almost too pretty to eat.  Almost.

Cabbage.  This will likely become cole slaw for our labor day cook out.

Romaine, close up.

Red onion.

Carrots.  We have a ton of carrots (they seem to multiply in the fridge) so some of these guys might get pickled and put up this weekend.

More recipes and canning to come this week.
