CSA: Week 16

September 14, 2011 by Sara Kreidler

Hey guys, remember last week when I was all “oh, it’s the end of tomato season.”  Well, I was wrong.

This week’s box includes:

  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Approximately 25 canning tomatoes
  • 3 heirloom tomatoes (including 2 green zebras)
  • Basil
  • 3 nectarines
  • 1 bell pepper
  • 1 jalapeno
  • 1 onion
  • 2 heads of garlic
  • 6 tomatillos
  • 5 small forno beets
  • Large bag of green beans
  • 1 gallon of cider
And now for some close ups of the goods.

Mr. Kretschmann’s newsletter for this week did say that we’re coming to the end of tomato season, and this will probably be one of the last big hauls.  So, I wasn’t too far off with my comment last week.  Anyway, I’m very happy to have another week of beautiful tomatoes.  And we’re totally finished canning tomatoes (if 80 quarts isn’t enough to sustain us, too bad), so we’ll have to come up with something fresh to make with these this week.

These are so juicy and perfect.

The first forno beets of the season (and one regular beet).  We’ll be canning a lot of these in the next few weeks.

Cider. The kids are very excited about this.  Ahh, fall.

I have a few things in mind for these items this week, so stay tuned for new posts.
